Patient Programs

Our Care Extends Beyond Our Walls

At Shriners Children's Lexington, our team is committed to caring for the overall health and well-being of our patients. This includes their minds as well as their bodies. In that spirit, we offer a wide variety of programs and camps.

Our extensive patient programs give children the opportunity to participate in enjoyable activities to brighten their stay and in camps that can help them return to their communities more active and confident.

Shriners Children's partners with a number of community organizations to provide opportunities for children to explore and grow their overall potential inside and outside of the hospital. Your nurse or care coordinator can direct you to opportunities in the community.

Camps

No Limits Sports Camps

Through the No Limits Sports Camp, your child can have the priceless opportunity to learn that there are no limits to their athletic abilities. Shriners Children's Lexington partners with area sports teams, primarily regional collegiate teams, to offer sports clinics where patients can connect with athletes, coaches, trainers and more. The camp is free for patients ages 5 to 18.

Camp Fez

Camp Fez is a summer camp offered by our recreational therapists and staff members. There are separate camps for boys and girls, held during the first two long weekends in the summer. Camp Fez is held at Camp Horsin’ Around, an off-site location in Perryville, Kentucky. Camp Fez was created for patients to build independence, create new friendships, learn leisure skills, experience new adventures, explore the great outdoors and allow all campers to practice barrier-free activities regardless of their physical limitations.

Programs

Annual Ball

The Annual Ball is an event for patients ages 12 and older. The Oleika Shriners in Lexington host it at their facility, and it is a magical night from the very moment participants arrive. All the participants and their guests are invited to arrive early to attend “the Boutique,” which includes Paul Mitchell hair, makeup and nail stylists, and a large variety of formal wear and formal jewelry selections. Then the party gets started with lots of dancing in an elegant ball room with a DJ and a variety of refreshments served by local Shriners. Participants look amazing, build new friendships and dance the night away with full inclusion.

Patient Activities Program

We provide patient activities in our Clinic and Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) lobby areas as children await their appointment. This is in the form of a large four-season activity magnet wall with colorful shapes, the interactive wall with a variety of active scenes, coloring/craft tables, and a large variety of toys and books to increase patient comfort in care areas. Our recreational therapists oversee these areas and also provide one-on-one activity intervention in the ASC pre- and post-op bays, cast room, clinic rooms and treatment room for education and distraction, and to increase coping with their appointment with a variety of activity and play interventions.

Playground

We have a playground located at the back of the Shriners Children's Lexington facility that is utilized by various departments, including recreational therapy, physical and occupational therapy and orthotics/prosthetics, and for patient programming. While on the playground, your child will be able to practice walking on uneven ground, taking stairs, balancing and jumping, along with sensory integration, motor planning and navigating a wheelchair, walker or crutches, so that when patients are at school and on public playgrounds, they will be able to participate in functions alongside their peers.

Teddy Bear Clinic

Our annual Teddy Bear Clinic gives patients the opportunity to bring their favorite stuffed animal to Shriners Children's and let medical professionals administer a check-up and treatment. The event, which is conducted in partnership with the Association of Peri-Operative Registered Nursing (AORN), is free and open to the public. Visitors to Shriners Children's Lexington will be able to tour a real operating room, see simulated triage and surgical care, and learn about recovery from a procedure and how to “take care” of their stuffed animal after. The goal of the clinic is to reduce fears about hospitals for children and to inspire careers in the medical field.
