Biography
Alexander Van Speybroeck, M.D., has been working at Shriners Children's Southern California since 2001. His practice focuses on the pediatric care of children with spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, metabolic bone disease, cerebral palsy, arthrogryposis and craniofacial conditions. He practices at Shriners Children's because he strongly believes in the mission of the hospital system. No child is ever turned away for a lack of ability to pay if they have a condition we can treat. He says that is a beautiful thing especially for our international patients who come from resource limited settings. Dr. Van Speybroeck greatly appreciates the collegiality of being able to work so closely with so many gifted orthopedic and plastic surgeons.
Dr. Van Speybroeck says that Shriners Children's has allowed him to have an academic career as well. He is an associate professor of pediatrics and Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He teaches medical students from USC Keck at Shriners Children's as well as pediatric residents from Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. Van Speybroeck's research primarily focuses on the care of children with spina bifida, and he feels fortunate to be an investigator on grants related to spina bifida care funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) section on birth defects. He serves nationally as a member of the Professional Advisory Council of the Spina Bifida Association and chair their Committee on Science and Research and Research Advisory Committee. He also serves on the medical board of the International Society for Sacral Agenesis and Caudal Regression Syndrome.
