Colton: Patient Ambassador

He was born with a condition known as spina bifida, specifically L2-L3 myelodysplasia, a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord do not form properly.

Spinal Fusion Surgery
Spinal fusion surgery stabilizes and corrects the curvature of the spine; and for scoliosis and kyphosis, prevents further curvature of the spine. Stabilizing the spine can improve movement, reduce pain and restore lung function.

Open Bite Deformity
In open bite deformity, upper and lower teeth slant outward and don't touch when mouth is closed. Skeletal open bite is caused by bone growth and genetics. May affect speech and eating. Shriners Children’s plastic surgeons can repair.

Spinal instability means there is abnormal motion between the bones of the spine, this could be from a disorder/syndrome or trauma that can cause pressure on the spinal cord.
