As a medical student, teachers always told María de Lourdes Velazquez-Rueda, M.D., "If you are not passionate about your career, you will not succeed." Dr. Velazquez-Rueda thought she was passionate about medicine in general, but it turned out she had not met her true love in medicine just yet. Although her internship in orthopedic surgery showed her that she enjoyed the subject, she became interested in hand surgery during her residency program as an orthopedic surgeon. As a fellow resident at Shriners Children's Mexico, she found her true passion: congenital hand surgery. Everything started falling into place. She began learning more about the subject, talking to renowned teachers who later became colleagues and training as a hand surgeon for a two-year period fellowship. She applied for a job at Shriners Children's Mexico as a hand surgeon and got accepted, fulfilling her dream and allowing her to help children and their families.
