Biography
Ian Powelson, M.D., is a board-certified plastic surgeon at Shriners Children’s Northern California. He attended Columbia University and the University of Michigan Medical school, earning BA and M.D. degrees, followed by a six-year training program in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. In addition, he completed fellowships in hand and upper extremity surgery (Johns Hopkins Hospital) and burn surgery (LAC+USC Medical Center), making him one of the only surgeons in the United States to have completed this combination of training.
At Shriners Children's, he performs a variety of pediatric plastic surgery procedures, including cleft lip and palate repair, burn reconstruction, tissue expansion for congenital nevi, laser surgery for vascular skin lesions and breast surgery. As a result of his comprehensive training, he is able to employ the full spectrum of reconstructive techniques to address burn scars from head to toe, including laser treatment, dermabrasion, skin grafting, tissue expansion and flap surgery. In addition, he treats patients with wounds of all kinds, including complex pressure injuries occurring in the setting of spinal cord injury and spina bifida.
