Biography
One of the first experiences in medical school that drew Christopher Makarewich, M.D., to orthopedics was watching a resident reduce a child's crooked forearm in the emergency department. Later, he was able to see that same young girl back in clinic, her cast removed and with a straight arm. During the remainder of his clinical years, while everything he saw was new and interesting, Dr. Makarewich's thoughts kept returning to the one little girl. He was amazed that a doctor could learn to use his or her hands to restore function and wellbeing, an effect that, in this case, would last her entire life. A career in pediatric orthopedics represents a chance to make a lifelong change in patients' health with the potential to have the longest lasting impact of any orthopedic specialty.
