As an adolescent, Cheryl Lawing, M.D., underwent multiple knee surgeries and persevered through the necessary physical therapy that followed each operation. Because of that experience, she is now able to offer her patients a special level of empathy. “I felt led to become a pediatric orthopedic surgeon because I want to help restore function to children – as my surgeon did for me,” Dr. Lawing said.

And now, as the mother of two daughters, another layer of understanding is added. “As a parent, I appreciate how terrifying it can be to have your child in need of medical care, and I am thankful to help families through what may be a challenging time.”

Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a published author of impactful research, Dr. Lawing is an active fellow with the Scoliosis Research Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. The Atlanta, Georgia, native received her undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia before earning her Doctorate of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

Prior to joining Shriners Children’s Greenville in April 2024, Dr. Lawing first served the organization’s mission at Shriners Children’s former location in Tampa, Florida. She said she was happy to rejoin the system because of her ability to “collaborate and innovate” with a network of talented care providers who are dedicated to improving the lives of children.
