Biography

Maheen Hassan, M.D.'s goal is to provide the best, evidence-driven care for children. She spends time with patients and families, listening to gain an understanding of a child's medical experience. Working together with patients, families and other medical professionals, Dr. Hassan works to devise medical plans for optimal care. If that involves procedures, it is her priority to keep the child as comfortable as possible.

Dr. Hassan is a pediatric gastroenterologist specialized in neurogastrointestinal motility. Her clinical interests include swallowing disorders, gastroesophageal reflux, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and Hirschsprung's disease. She has clinical expertise in managing patients in multidisciplinary settings and has had an active role in aerodigestive and colorectal centers in former institutions.

Dr. Hassan's research interests include swallowing disorders and constipation. Her past research focused on diagnostic techniques in eosinophilic esophagitis, specifically in measuring esophageal compliance and correlating that to symptoms and molecular markers of inflammation. She has also been involved in studying how virtual reality modules on diaphragmatic breathing can help treat functional constipation.

Dr. Hassan believes in treating every child holistically. If a child has been experiencing GI issues for a prolonged period of time, this can have mental and emotional impacts. She believes it is important to address psychological needs in conjunction with the GI issues.
