Biography
Jonathan Friedstat, M.D., MPH, has always liked challenges and teamwork since he was a wrestler in high school and college. Those qualities are also what drew him into surgery, and specifically into burns. Much like he enjoyed pushing himself in athletics, he did the same in his career, accumulating a unique skill set to treat children in need and also solve difficult problems. The combination of general surgery, plastic surgery, critical care and microsurgery allow him to see solutions to problems from multiple perspectives. He is also passionate about improving burn care through research.
Coming to Shriners Children's was a natural decision given its reputation in burn care and affiliation with Massachusetts General Hospital. What Dr. Friedstat most admired about the program, was that it was dedicated to burn victims from the New England area, the greater United States and internationally. Shriners Children's wide reach is particularly meaningful to him because it's a chance to help children and make a difference in their lives. So to be a part of that process and give patients a chance they may not have had, makes working at Shriners Children's so special. The staff also shares in the commitment to help patients and their families through tough times, which is incredibly rewarding for Dr. Friedstat.
While he has lived all over the United States for training, Boston has become a home to him, which is great because of its closer proximity to Chicago where he grew up. In his free time, Dr. Friedstat enjoys learning new things, exploring the outdoors and working on photography.
