Clara Embodies Empathy

Amazekids: Clara Embodies Empathy

Clara, aspires to be a doctor with the hope of helping others, inspired by the care she’s received at Shriners Children’s. Diagnosed with infantile scoliosis, Clara has received treatments including wearing over 14 different Mehta casts in her young life. She now wears a thoracic lumbar sacral orthosis brace 23 hours a day, but that doesn’t slow down this bubbly, fun, active and most of all, animal-loving kiddo.

Clara:

Let's go higher.

Aubrey:

Not too high.

Clara:

Why not?

Aubrey:

If one of us falls, we could break something.

Clara:

I don't need any more casts and I would feel bad if you got hurt.

Aubrey:

Wow. You really care about your friends, don't you?

Clara:

I was born to care.

Aubrey:

What do you mean?

Clara:

I'm only seven years old, but I've had many surgeries for my scoliosis. That's when you're born with bones in your back that aren't straight. And if there's one thing I've learned along the way, it's how important it is to care for others, even animals, because all of us want to be loved and taken care of. That's why when I grow up, I want to be a doctor so I can help other kids like me get better. Just like the doctors and nurses at Shiner's Children's who help me.

Aubrey:

Wow. You sure have a lot of empathy.

Clara:

What's that?

Aubrey:

Just what you were talking about. It's understanding and caring about how someone else feels.

Clara:

Well, that's easy. Caring is love.

Aubrey:

And then the world always needs love.
