Celebrating Care Manager's Week

Rachel Chapman – RN Care Manager, Galveston Shriners Hospital

Although Rachel Chapman, BSN, RN, has only been with Shriners Hospitals for Children — Galveston since May of 2019, she has already made a huge impact on those patients and families she’s cared for. A nurse since 2004, Rachel brings vast clinical expertise to her role as an RN care manager. While focused on helping her patients with their reconstructive, surgical needs resulting from pediatric burns, Rachel is also a very active staff member within the hospital. She serves as a staff ambassador, and is a member of both the Practice and Outcomes Committee and the Employee Activities Committee.

Rachel loves to make others smile, even during the most difficult situations, and finds bringing comfort to children and their families her ultimate mission. Rachel’s passion for caring for her patients and families is evident not only to those she serves, but to those around her as well.

One example of her passion for helping others can be seen through her relationship with little Mirna. Since the day she arrived at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Galveston, Mirna has held a special place in Rachel’s heart. As a mother of four, Rachel was drawn to help a frightened Mirna and her mother, who not only came from another country, but also had no ability to speak or understand English. Rachel’s goal for Mirna and her mother became providing them a sense of security and assurance by carefully guiding them through every step of care they would receive at the hospital.

Since coming to know one another, Rachel and Mirna have come to be known about the hospital by other staff members as a “dynamic duo,” and have dance parties during rehabilitation therapy with Mirna’s favorite therapist, Marie. They also often meet and laugh with new friends in the hallway. Because of the relationship she’s developed with Rachel, and the excellent care she’s received from the rest of her Galveston Shriners Hospital team, Mirna continues to blossom. She’s learning English, loves to joke and laugh with everyone, and her scars are healing.

Care managers like Rachel, and the amazing care management team we have at our Galveston location, make a world of difference in the lives of the children we serve. Happy Care Management Week to everyone who makes caring for others their passion!
