Shriners Children's Provides Compassionate Care for Children with Neurogenic Bladder

The goal of our colorectal and gastrointestinal specialty program is to provide children with anal-rectal disorders advanced care and rehabilitation that frees them from social stigma and allows them to live and play like other children.

What is Neurogenic Bladder?

Neurogenic bladder is when the urinary tract is not working properly and causes the bladder not to empty as it normally would. Sometimes it is caused by a birth defect, usually one involving the spinal cord or as the result of a different problem. Neurogenic bladder can’t be cured but it can be managed with medication and intermittent catheterization. Only a small percentage of children with the condition end up needing major reconstructive surgery.

A common concern of parents is “Will my child still be in diapers when they are school age?” The short answer is most likely, no. Shriners Children's doctors will make sure that a child has the right treatment options to live as normal a life as possible.

How We Care for Children with Neurogenic Bladder

Treatment begins with a proper diagnosis, and the pediatric surgeons at Shriners Children's carefully evaluate each patient to develop an individual treatment plan. Shriners Children's can not cure neurogenic bladder, but we can provide all the tools necessary to manage your child’s condition. By protecting their internal digestive system and encouraging regular flushing of their system, we work hard to give a child as normal a life as possible.

We provide follow-up care to monitor your child’s health, prevent problems, manage symptoms and give your child the best quality of life.

Specific treatments and services may vary by location. Please contact a specific location for more information.
