John P. Ferris, Jr., D.O., was born in Ohio and grew up in Michigan. He received his undergraduate degree from Albion College in Michigan and completed medical school at Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. He went on to complete his orthopedic surgical residency at Mount Clemens General Hospital in Michigan and a pediatric orthopedic surgery fellowship from Louisiana State University at Children’s Hospital New Orleans.
Dr. Ferris’s passion for treating patients with orthopedic conditions began in his childhood. Born with foot deformities, Ferris spent his first six weeks of life in casts. During his pediatric orthopedic surgery residency, he was able to connect with patients and families who were going through similar experiences and realized the importance of helping children with orthopedic conditions. He then sought a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics.
Ferris joined Shriners Children's in September 2023, as part of a career that has taken him all over the United States, including California, Louisiana, Michigan and Arkansas. He is most passionate about treating patients with scoliosis and clubfoot conditions. He understands that many parents may be concerned or feeling stress about their child’s quality-of-life due to their condition, and he hopes to help them see that with treatment, and possibly surgery, their children can still succeed in and enjoy life, just like any other child.
Dr. Ferris is married and has a son and daughter. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking, woodworking, scuba diving and traveling. He is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics and the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America.
