The Central Courtyard of Shriners Children's Mexico: Camila

After an unfavorable prognosis of 3 days of life at birth, Camila, now 12 years old, has a clear goal: to become a professional athlete in wheelchair racing.

This passion arose in a very particular space within the hospital where she has received medical care for almost her entire life: the central courtyard of Shriners Children's Mexico.

Camila's story begins before her birth, when her mother, Tania, faced challenges during her pregnancy due to her own struggle with epilepsy. Despite the adversities, Tania made the decision to ensure the well-being of her daughter, who was diagnosed with myelomeningocele, clubfoot and hydrocephalus.

Camila's initial diagnosis was that she would not ever be able to walk. However, it was at Shriners Children's where doctors discovered that Camila's little legs responded to the stimuli they provided, instilling hope in the family of seeing her stand someday.

In other hospitals we were told that she wouldn't be able to walk. At Shriners Children's Mexico, she will.

So far, Camila has undergone nine surgical interventions, and each one has left its mark thanks to the exceptional treatment from all the hospital staff. “From the doctors who have cared for her to the nurses who have accompanied her, even the police; everyone has welcomed us with open arms and a smile,” said Tania.

Camila is able to walk with the help of a walker. However, during every hospital visit she makes sure to spend time in her favorite spot: the central patio.

Filled with decorative planters and divided by ramps so that patients in wheelchairs can slide, the central patio has been a place of significant moments in Camila's life. It was here that she discovered her passion for speed, a passion that drives her to pursue her dream of becoming a professional athlete. Each visit is a reminder of her strength and determination, and the central patio bears witness to her journey to greatness.
