Shriners Children’s Northern California was honored to host the annual R. Kirklin Ashley Lectureship Series, a hallmark event that reflects our unwavering commitment to advancing clinical excellence and lifelong learning in pediatric orthopedics.

This year’s gathering brought together over 30 surgeons, physicians, residents, physician assistants and medical specialists for a dynamic day of insightful lectures, thought-provoking discussions and innovative presentations. More than an educational forum, the event serves as a tribute to Dr. Ashley’s enduring legacy – inspiring the next generation of leaders in compassionate, high-quality care.

Since 1993, the event has welcomed a distinguished orthopedic leader as the guest of honor each year. They join as a lecturer to share insightful case presentations, groundbreaking research and best practices in the field. This year’s guest of honor and lecturer was Jose A. Morcuende, M.D., Ph.D., Marvin and Rose Lee Pomerantz chair, professor of orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation, and pediatrics from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Morcuende, originally from Madrid, Spain, earned his medical degree and Ph.D. from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. In 1991, he moved to the United States, where he now serves as a professor in the department of orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation, as well as pediatrics. His clinical expertise lies in pediatric orthopedics and musculoskeletal oncology. As the director of the Ponseti Center for Clubfoot Treatment and the Molecular Genetics Orthopaedic Laboratory, he focuses on researching the genetic basis of clubfoot, scoliosis and other pediatric disorders.

With over 125 publications and numerous presentations at national and international conferences, Dr. Morcuende is a leading figure in his field. His contributions extend beyond research, as he has held leadership roles in multiple professional organizations. He also has secured numerous grants for basic science, clinical studies and global health initiatives, including a USAID grant to develop national clubfoot programs. Additionally, he serves as the executive director of Ponseti International Association.

Honoring a Legacy of Excellence and Compassion

For over 30 years, the R. Kirklin Ashley Lectureship Series has celebrated the life and impact of a visionary surgeon, educator and mentor. Dr. Ashley’s legacy – defined by compassion, diagnostic brilliance and surgical mastery – continues to inspire generations of orthopedic specialists.

A San Francisco native, Dr. Ashley earned his degrees from Princeton University and Temple University School of Medicine. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he discovered his calling during a transformative year at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia, setting the course for a lifelong dedication to pediatric orthopedics.

In 1953, he joined Shriners Children’s Northern California, where his leadership flourished. Rising to chief of staff (1981–1991) and later serving as chief emeritus, he remained a guiding force in clinics, ORs and hallways – always pausing to connect with the children he cared for. Even after his passing in 1996, his warmth and brilliance endure in the hearts of colleagues, patients and families.
