A spectacular donation to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California, has given special meaning to the familiar phrase “if the shoe fits wear it.”  Super Heroic, an organization guided by the motto that play is good for the soul is making patients at Shriners Hospital feel like superheroes through its gift of 200 pairs of Super Heroic Shoes.

Meant to inspire creativity and the invincible feeling of play, the “heroic” shoes come packaged in a colorful cardboard cylinder.  Music plays when kids open the cylinder and discover a bright new pair of shoes, along with a cape and drawstring backpack emblazoned with the company’s lightning bolt logo.

A kinesiologist and former Shriners Hospital employee who now works for Super Heroic donated the special shoes to the hospital. “She had the opportunity to make a donation, and she wanted to give back to Shriners Hospital. She thought the shoes would be a fun and useful gift for the children we serve,” said Anita Bagley, who works with Shriners Hospital kinesiologists as co-director of the Motion Analysis Center.

Alex Gallardo, a therapeutic recreation specialist at the Northern California Shriners Hospital says it is fun to see the joy in patients’ faces when they open their new pair of heroic shoes.

“We schedule play as part of our patients’ daily routine because it is so important to the healing process, and the Super Heroic shoes promote the idea of empowering children through play,” Gallardo said. “We are so grateful for the donation. It is a gift that fits right in with our therapeutic recreation program and supports Shriners Hospital in its mission to treat children in mind, body and spirit.”
