Summer Program Promotes Patient Fitness

Get ready! Get set! Be fit!

This summer, patients of Shriners Hospitals for Children ─ Northern California are invited to participate in a BFit flyer. Complete with 8 weekly fitness sessions and two warm-ups, the program is organized by the rehabilitation team in partnership with the Movement Analysis Lab.  Patients 5 – 18 years old with a desire to improve their fitness and function are invited to participate. All activities take place at the Northern California Shriners Hospital in Sacramento beginning June 16.

“So many of our patients are determined to get out in the community and participate in adaptive and recreational sports,” says Alice Marie Laverdiere, a physical therapist and manager of Rehabilitation Services at the Northern California Shriners Hospital.  “The BFit program will give them the extra boost they need to feel confident in their endeavors. For those who wish, we hope the program will prepare them to participate in the Epic Challenge, a division of the Eppie’s Kids Duathalon organized for children with disabilities that will take place in October.”

Adaptive Bicycle Fitting on June 16

Shriners Hospital patients, who sign up for the 8-week BFit program, are invited to an adaptive bicycle fitting from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, June 16 courtesy of AmTryke.  Trained specialists will provide participants with a free fitting for an adaptive tryke. Both hand cycles and foot cycles will be available, and the purpose of the fitting is to determine the size and type of cycle appropriate for each patient.  Families that wish to purchase a cycle will be able to do so at a reduced cost.

“The program is important because it will help participants improve fitness, coordination, and self-esteem in a fun environment. Owning a tryke encourages a life-long pursuit of physical fitness, and it can enable children to participate in activities with their peers,” said Anita Bagley, co-director of the Movement Analysis Lab and the BFit program.

BFit Kick-Off on June 25

A BFit kick-off event will take place from 9 – 11 a.m., Saturday, June 25, in the Shriners Hospital auditorium. Patients and families will meet the BFit coaches, pick up tips on good sports nutrition prepared by Shriners Hospital clinical dietitians and have an opportunity to ask questions.

Fitness on Thursdays ─ July 7 through  August 25

From July 7 through August 25, BFit participants will enjoy eight weeks in a row of 90-minute fitness sessions. Each session begins at 5 p.m., with a group warm-up followed by cycling practice with one-on-one coaching led by Shriners Hospital physical therapists.  Each session concludes with group cool-down.
