Shriners Hospitals for Children is paving the way for the development of a pediatric powerhouse in the heart of Northern California. In a unanimous decision, the Joint Boards of Shriners Hospitals for Children voted to expand programs and services at its hospital in Sacramento.
“As a mission-driven organization, our decisions are guided by the needs of the kids we serve. The demonstrated success of the Northern California hospital coupled with its location in a region with a growing population of children made our decision a natural,” said Jerry G. Gantt, chairman of the board of the Shriners Hospitals Board of Trustees.
Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California has treated more than 80,000 children since it opened in Sacramento in April 1997. Doctors and other health care providers refer more than 7,000 new patients for care each year. Shrine leaders expect clinical volume to double in the next decade.
“We are extremely grateful for this opportunity to increase the magnitude of our programs and serve even more children who can benefit from our care. This decision is a tribute to the Sacramento community, which has been integral to the success of our hospital,” said Margaret Bryan, hospital administrator and CEO. “Sacramento welcomed Shriners Hospital with open arms and has actively supported our mission for more than two decades,” she added.
Home to the Institute of Pediatric Regenerative Medicine (IPRM), the Northern California hospital is a distinguished teaching and research facility. It is a local and statewide leader in the treatment of a number of pediatric subspecialties. The hospital is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation’s top 10 hospitals for pediatric orthopaedics in conjunction with the UC Davis Children’s Hospital. Gantt said the Board’s vision is for the Shriners’ Northern California Hospital to become a destination of choice distinguished by centers of excellence in burns, orthopaedics, pediatric surgery, acute rehabilitation and more.
“Our investment in Northern California will take place in concert with the formation of new partnerships and a clinical presence in more communities, allowing Shriners Hospitals for Children to serve more kids in more places,” said Gantt, adding that discussions are underway on how the expansion will be structured. “We have a historic opportunity to establish a pediatric powerhouse that will highlight our clinical pre-eminence and model the collaborative approach to care that is the hallmark of Shriners Hospitals for Children,” he said.
