UPDATED DATES for 2020 in Original Post
The first week of February marks the kick-off of community prevention education efforts in celebration of national Burn Awareness Week (Feb. 2 – 8). Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California chose the annual observance as a time to roll out its Safety Begins at Home burn prevention program for K – 3rd graders.
Members of the hospital’s burn team present the interactive program. The presentation includes a host of tips to promote safety inside the home animated with photos, a hat game and support from Fezzy, the Shriners Hospital mascot. Thanks to the support of the Firefighters Burn Institute, local firefighters teach kids about fire safety and show them how to escape through the window of a house on fire. Participants receive a “prevention bag” with a coloring book, a home escape plan, and tips on cooking safety to share with their families, along with their very own fire hat to wear home.
On Thursday, February 7, 2019, kindergarteners from Del Dayo Elementary School in Carmichael will travel to Shriners Hospital to participate in Safety Begins at Home. On January 31, 2019, the burn team traveled to Caleb Greenwood Elementary School to present the program to four kindergarten classes.
Caleb Greenwood kindergarten teacher Rosanne Cherry sent her feedback: “What a WONDERFUL day today with your Shriners program!! Thanks so much for helping us to coordinate this great learning opportunity for our little ones. Our Kinders loved it, and they learned so, SO much! And they were thrilled with their “gift bags” to take home and teach their families about fire safety in the home.”
To make prevention part of your education, call 916-453-2018 to make your reservation. There are two ways to participate:
- Schedule a field trip for your class, scout troop or club to attend a Safety Begins at Home program in the Shriners Hospital auditorium, 2425 Stockton Boulevard, in Sacramento.
- Schedule a school assembly so several classes can participate in the program on the same day.
Once again, reservations are required as programs are scheduled weeks in advance.
