Shriners from near and far joined patients, families and the community for the Northern California Shriners Hospital’s Shrine Day – Walk for LOVE® on Saturday, June 3. The event celebrated the 20th anniversary of the dedication of Sacramento’s only stand-alone children’s hospital.
Imperial High Priest and Prophet Jeffrey L. Sowder joined the estimated 1,200-plus participants in a 1.5-mile fun walk that culminated in a barbecue and family festival. Sowder, who also is vice chair of the Imperial Donor Relations Committee and Imperial Liaison to the Northern California Hospital, thanked those in attendance for supporting the hospital and celebrating the work done by Shriners to make a positive difference in the lives of children.
Mr. Sowder was joined on stage by David Johnson, Chairman of the Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California Board of Governors. Mr. Johnson noted that the hospital has accepted more than 70,000 children for care since it opened its doors in 1997. He also noted that the hospital’s reputation for excellence is reflected by fact that it is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals for pediatric orthopaedics — a distinction it shares with the UC Davis Children’s Hospital.
Most of all, the event’s success was reflected by the positive comments as walker after walker said they look forward to next year’s event. Many participants took to social media to praise to share their feedback. Facebook posts included:
- “Thank you for an enjoyable 1st Walk for Love for us!”
- “We had so much fun thank you Shriners.”
- “Beautiful day for a walk! As always, Shriners Hospital went all out and did a fantastic job today!! Thank you to all our friends/family at Shriners Hospital!”
Event sponsors included the Firefighters Burn Institute, South Bay Scenic, Detail Maniac, Sacramento Magazine and UC Davis Children’s Hospital.
Plans are underway for the 2018 Walk for Love, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 9.
