Renowned artist Leonard Filgate delights patients in Hospital school

We had the pleasure of welcoming illustrator Leonard Filgate and his wife Susan Yost- Filgate, children’s book author and educator, to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California. Our Outpatient Clinic and our Pediatric Orthotics & Prosthetics Services treatment rooms are home to a small collection of Mr. Filgate’s fantastic artwork.  The colorful pieces were donated  by  David Johnson, Vice Chairman of the Hospital Board of Governors, and his wife Sloan.

The Filgates recently  joined David Johnson for a hospital tour. Stops, of course, included  rooms where Mr. Filgate’s colorful paintings are on display.  Mr. Filgate brought his work to life when he stopped inside the Shriners Hospital School  to give students a brief lesson on illustration. The Shriners Hospital School partners with community organizations to enrich the learning experience of hospital patients. A joint project of Shriners Hospitals for Children and Sacramento City Unified School District, the on-site public school provides education to children in preschool through 12th grade.

Mr. Filgate has enjoyed a lifelong career as an artist and illustrator.  In 1997 he began work on the creation of illustrations for the Rip Squeak project and continued developing and painting in that theme, until 2007, at which time he chose to explore other avenues with his art and illustration. His originals and prints (over 40 editions) have been sold in numerous US art galleries and can be found in private and public collections throughout the world.
