Preston M. James, M.D., Memorial Fund

Preston M. James, M.D., former Assistant Chief of Orthopaedics at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California was revered within the orthopaedic medical community, beloved by his patients and their families and greatly admired by the hospital’s staff with whom he worked every day.

Dr. James spent over 40 years working with Shriners Hospitals. From the beginning of his tenure in 1970 at the San Francisco Hospital, it was clear that his skill as an orthopaedic surgeon and his easy demeanor with children would combine to assure that their lives would be better under his care. We all celebrated when he accepted the position as Assistant Chief of Orthopaedics and decided to move to Sacramento with the opening of the Northern California hospital in 1997. He was an energetic and committed clinician until his retirement in 2013. Dr. James will be remembered by thousands of former patients for his compassionate care, by innumerable families for providing them with peace of mind and by his colleagues for his irrepressible joy and his wicked sense of humor. He was a giant, our giant, and he will be greatly missed.
