Today Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California teamed up with the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) to distribute approximately 200 home activity kits to local families.

Shriners staff distributed the kits today at Tahoe Elementary School, a SCUSD school approximately two miles from the Shriners Sacramento campus. The kits were distributed this morning, at the same time SCUSD nutrition services workers distributed curbside free meals to families.

The home activity kits included sidewalk chalk, bubbles, popsicle sticks, playing cards, and other activities and tips for keeping young hands and minds active during home quarantine.

Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California understands that therapeutic play is an essential element for reducing fear and anxiety in children, whether they are facing a medical procedure or other stress.

“Play and creativity is key to helping children reduce stress and anxiety,” said Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California Director of Clinical Services, Allan (AJ) Johnson. “During this time, we hope these home activities can help our neighborhood families.”

Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California incorporates anxiety-reducing activities and play into their patients’ recovery with special Therapeutic Recreation and Child Life programming. An entire section of a hospital floor of Shriners’ hospital in Sacramento is dedicated to therapeutic play. Such play includes everything from card games and art projects to karaoke and line dancing.

The home activity kits will help SCUSD children engage in some new creative play during quarantine.

“We appreciate how our community has come together to support our families during these difficult times,” said SCUSD Superintendent Jorge Aguilar. “Our students will surely put their new creative resources to good use.”
