Shriners Hospitals for Children –Northern California is proud to introduce Zachary Nazareno as its patient ambassador to the 2016 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Zachary, age 10, has been a patient at the Northern California Shriners Hospital since August 2011, when doctors at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center referred him to the Shriners regional pediatric medical center in Sacramento for treatment of a rare bacterial infection (Group A Streptococcus). Zachary’s care has been coordinated by the hospital’s multidisciplinary team of specialists – including burn surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and physical therapists. “Golf is a sport that Zachary enjoys. He has been taking golf lessons for the past couple of months and is excited to walk along side the professional golfers as a patient ambassador,” said his father, Gerard Nazareno.
Zachary was chosen as one of 22 patient ambassadors to represent the hospital network at the tournament. He will serve as a standard-bearer, carrying the scores of a group of professional golfers as they compete in the final rounds of the tournament the weekend of Nov. 5 and 6. It is a rare “behind the ropes” opportunity at the PGA Tour event, as well as the chance to share how Shriners Hospitals have helped transform his life.
An active 5th grader, Zachary lives in Mountain House, CA. Zachary competed in a duathalon in October 2015 and enjoys other sports, including sled hockey and wheelchair basketball. His favorite subjects are history and science. His hobbies include building Legos, fishing and reading.
