Dr. Kathleen Romanowski Joins Burn Team at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California

Katie Romanowski, M.D., Burn Surgeon

Kathleen Romanowski, M.D., has joined the burn surgery team at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California, a regional provider of pediatric burn care.

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to take care of burn injured children in such a wonderful hospital environment with such an amazing, supportive and collaborative team,” said Dr. Romanowski.  “I chose burn surgery and critical care because the practice marries the two sides of my brain.  I have to think scientifically about the critical aspects of a patient’s care, and I have to think artistically about their reconstructive surgeries. It is extremely rewarding to see patients flourish after injury and grow into amazing adults after facing such a hardship.”

A graduate of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, Dr. Romanowski was a resident at the University of Chicago Medical Center before completing fellowships in Burn Surgery and Critical Care at the UC Davis Medical Center. She worked as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa, Department of Surgery before returning to Sacramento, where she also is an assistant professor at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine.

“We are proud to welcome such an outstanding surgeon-scientist to our team,” said Dr. David Greenhalgh, chief of burns at the Northern California Shriners Hospital. “Dr. Romanowski’s clinical expertise benefits the children we serve today. Her research interests will help us discover new and innovative ways to treat those with burn injuries,” he added.

Dr. Romanowski’s research interests include frailty of burn patients, the use of long-acting pain medications, and disparities in burn care.  Her work has been published in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, Journal of Burn Care & Research and other professional journals. Dr. Romanowski is a member of the American Burn Association, American College of Surgeons, Society of Critical Care Medicine, Association of Academic Surgeons, and the Association of Women Surgeons.

The Shriners Hospital burn team treats burns of all sizes — from massive, life-threatening burns to the smallest fingertip burn.  Expert care extends to children with serious skin conditions, dog bites, skin tears and other wounds.

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California is the region’s only dedicated pediatric burn program verified by the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons. Children throughout California, the Western United States and the northwestern region of Mexico are treated at the hospital in Sacramento.
