As Director of Research at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California, David E. Pleasure, M.D., has focused much of his clinical training in neurology, specifically in neural development and regeneration. Dr. Pleasure came to Sacramento from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to develop a collaborative research program. He worked in partnership with the University of California, Davis School of Medicine to establish the Institute for Pediatric Regenerative Medicine (IPRM) at the Northern California Shriners Hospital, and has recruited researchers from around the world to populate the IPRM. The IPRM trains approximately 30 pre- and post-doctoral research fellows each year.

Dr. Pleasure is a Distinguished Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics, and was elected an Honorary Member of the American Neurological Association, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.Prior to moving to the UC Davis School of Medicine, Dr. Pleasure successfully completed substantive administrative roles at CHOP. As Director of Neurology, Dr. Pleasure led the CHOP Pediatric Neurology program to become one of the leading research-oriented pediatric neurology training programs in the nation.

As Senior Vice President for Research, he helped CHOP to reach a 15% annual rate of increase in extramural research support, to approximately $135 million a year, contributing to CHOP’s ranking as one of the nation’s most respected pediatric hospitals.Dr. Pleasure’s research centers on development and diseases of the central nervous system. He has thus far published 240 articles on those topics in peer-reviewed journals. He is Associate Editor for Neurological Progress of JAMA Neuro, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Neuroscience.
