Teaching children and families how to prevent the devastating effects of burn injuries is an important part of the Shriners Hospital mission. The burn team at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California makes learning fun with Safety Begins at Home, an interactive prevention program geared to Kindergarten through third grade audiences. The program includes a media presentation, a visit from local firefighters and interactive games facilitated by prevention mascots Ben and Ali. Students who attend receive a prevention t-shirt and coloring book. Teachers are invited to engage students beyond the program with prevention games and other exercises. As part of its Be Burn Aware campaign, Shriners Hospitals for Children has put safety tips and burn prevention information at your fingertips.
Careers in health care
Professionals working at our Northern California Shriners Hospital introduce high school and college students to many different careers in health care in this popular program, which is scheduled throughout the year. All programs include an introduction on Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California and its unique mission, an inspirational video and presentation by a Northern California Shriners Hospital staff member on a career in health care. Nursing, physical and occupational therapy, diagnostic imaging, orthotics and prosthetics, health information management, therapeutic recreation, respiratory therapy and infection control are among the many careers highlighted in the program. Students 16 and older are invited to tour the hospital following the presentations. All programs begin at 10 a.m., in the hospital auditorium. Reservations are required.
In keeping with Shriners Hospitals’ mission to advance the lives of children through treatment, teaching and research, the Lunchtime lecture at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California is organized to engage and educate health care professionals and the community at large.
