The Ashley Lectureship was organized in 1993 to honor the contributions of an outstanding pediatric orthopaedist, provide cutting-edge education, and inspire orthopaedic residents to consider pediatric orthopaedics as a specialty. The lectureship is named in honor of R. Kirklin Ashley, M.D., who joined the medical staff at the San Francisco Shriners Hospital in 1951 and provided leadership and care until his death in 1996.
“The Ashley Lectureship celebrates the best in pediatric orthopaedic surgery by honoring an exceptional doctor who was respected by his colleagues as an outstanding surgeon and regarded for his kindness,” says Dr. Michelle James, chief of orthopaedics at the Northern California Shriners Hospital. “Many remember him as the doctor who would stop in the hallway to chat with a child, an act of kindness that reminds us how important the human touch is in the healing process.”
A leader in pediatric orthopaedics, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 50 pediatric orthopaedic programs in the United States in conjunction with UC Davis Children’s Hospital.
