Meet Breanna Williams, Child Life Activities Coordinator

March is Child Life Month. As we celebrate the important role child life specialists play in the care of children at our Shriners Hospital, we invite you to meet our very special team. A hospital stay can be a stressful time for both children and their parents. Child life specialists help patients and their families cope with the experience by giving children opportunities to play, learn and express themselves in a safe and compassionate environment of care. By working directly with patients, child life specialists empower children to express their fears, gain awareness about their medical care and, in turn, the ability to positively deal with their hospital experience.

Name:  Breanna Williams

Occupation/Title: Child Life Activities Coordinator

Interests / Hobbies: Taylor Swift, T-Rexes, golfing with my husband, running, watching Shark Week, baking, and eating candy.

When did you start working at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California?  I started out as a volunteer in our department and was exploring the field of Child Life. I have a profound respect for the Child Life team Shriners has assembled here and was eager to join and continue to learn from them.

Can you share a bit about what makes your job so rewarding? In our area we see patients on their first day, when they are feeling a little timid and unsure, and watch them progress to happily playing with their peers for hours in the Activity Area. We also get to plan community visits and special holiday events for patients and their families to enjoy.

How would you describe a good day at work? It’s a good day when all of our kids are happily engaged in our area, playing with peers, and feeling empowered and free to just be kids.

What would you like the community to know about Shriners Hospitals for Children-Northern California? We truly strive to treat the whole patient and family instead just addressing a specific medical need. We are able to do so because of the countless people in our community who make it possible.

Thank you so much, Breanna. We appreciate your commitment to our patients and families!
